The Right Cylinder for Gibraltar Water Conditions
Not all hot water cylinders are suitable for every water supply. Stainless-steel cylinders rely on a naturally occurring protective oxide layer to resist corrosion. Where chloride concentrations become elevated, that protective layer may be compromised, increasing the risk of localised corrosion and reducing product service life.
This is one of the principal reasons why product selection should always reflect local water conditions rather than simply geographic location.
Gibraltar's water chemistry may differ significantly from that found across most of the United Kingdom. Elevated chloride levels and heavily treated water can create challenging operating conditions for some conventional stainless-steel cylinders, potentially increasing corrosion risk and reducing product lifespan where applicable operating limits are exceeded.
To help address the demands of Gibraltar's local water conditions, Megaflo Extreme has been developed to provide enhanced corrosion resistance, durability, and long-term performance, subject to correct product selection, installation, use and maintenance in accordance with applicable technical guidance.
About Megaflo Extreme
Megaflo Extreme has been specifically developed for locations where water chemistry places increased demands on hot water cylinders. The product range is designed to offer improved resistance to corrosion mechanisms associated with elevated chloride levels in water supplies when compared with standard cylinders intended for typical UK water conditions. In aggressive water conditions, some standard cylinders may experience accelerated degradation. Megaflo Extreme is designed to provide durable, dependable performance over the long term, provided that the product is suitable for the specific installation conditions and is installed, commissioned, used and maintained in accordance with the relevant manufacturer’s instructions.
Products Not Recommended for Gibraltar
Standard UK Cylinder Products
Most standard UK cylinder ranges have been designed for UK water conditions and installation environments. Gibraltar's water chemistry may differ from these design parameters* and, in certain circumstances, may increase the risk of corrosion and reduce product service life. For this reason, careful product selection is recommended when specifying cylinders for Gibraltar installations.
As a result, the following are generally not recommended for installation in Gibraltar:
- Standard Megaflo cylinders
- Standard UK domestic unvented cylinders
- Cylinders not specifically designed for aggressive water conditions
Cylinders manufactured from materials that are not intended for high-chloride environments

Please note that the standard Baxi/Heatrae Sadia cylinder warranty applies only to cylinders purchased and installed within the United Kingdom, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. Consequently, standard UK warranty coverage does not extend to installations in Gibraltar unless expressly agreed otherwise in writing.
*Water Chemistry and Chloride Resistance
The long-term performance of a stainless-steel hot water cylinder is heavily influenced by the chemical composition of the water supply. Chloride ions (Cl⁻) are naturally occurring salts commonly found in drinking water and may also be present as a result of desalination and water-treatment processes. At elevated concentrations, chlorides can attack the passive chromium oxide layer that protects stainless-steel surfaces from corrosion.
When this protective layer is compromised, localised corrosion mechanisms may occur, including:
- Pitting corrosion
- Crevice corrosion
- Accelerated material degradation
Premature cylinder failure
The installation requirements for standard cylinders specify a maximum chloride concentration of 250 mg/l (250 ppm). Water supplies exceeding this level significantly increases corrosion risk and reduce product life expectancy and cylinders not manufactured using materials suitable for aggressive water environments may experience substantially reduced service life under these conditions.
Product suitability should always be assessed against local water chemistry, installation conditions and current technical guidance.
